It’s been over a year since Hurricane Irma devastated Virgin Gorda, leveling much of the island, and displacing its beautiful people. For the first time in over twenty-five years, and for the first time in our children’s lives, we were not able to visit what is not only our second home, but an oasis where we find peace and joy; where we recharge to face the chaos of our daily lives.

More than our personal loss, what we felt and still feel was heartbroken for BVI’s Belongers. As much as we hurt, it was also profoundly apparent that we had the security of our first home while we rebuilt this one.

But along with the heartbreak, was the kindness that so many people exhibited – the money, time, resources and love that poured into the BVI. Seeing our own children give up birthday gifts and ask instead for donations to the local school as they too ached for this place they love so deeply.

Building a vacation home is a privilege and a luxury, but tourism is the lifeblood of the BVI economy. Getting these homes back up and running means jobs, money and a continuing show of love and faith for the BVI. It means the ability to continue to reopen and rebuilt. Virgin Gorda will never be what it was; it will evolve into something else, something perhaps even more wonderful.

Grotto at The Baths

In the coming months, we look forward to sharing on this blog everything that we learn about our home and heart, Virgin Gorda. We’ll tell you about the restaurants, new and old, and about our favorite destinations on land and in the water. Please come visit! Stay in our home or one of the other beautiful places around the island. Eat the food, meet the people, snorkel the reefs– we know that here, you too will find peace and joy.

If you are visiting Virgin Gorda, whether staying at our home or elsewhere and wish to contribute to this Blog, please reach out! We’d love to share your reflections on this slice of heaven!
